The first phase of our concept art project. We had to make a hundred silhouettes and explore several of their shapes to see what we could come up with.

History of GIC 1/26/09
This session took us through the evolution of type through the ages. Starting with the Egyptian Illustrated Manuscripts we, saw how each civilization contributed to lettering, such as Greeks applying geometric structure and making a standardized system, Romans creating Monumental Capitals, form of the page in Medieval times, Movable type for mass printing in 1454, the French Romain Du Roi setting a list of standards, using the human body to rationalize form, all the way to the faces of the font designed by individual artists, making a business selling their font faces to book publishers. We saw how Calligraphy died, how math prevailed and the Designer became the Engineer.
